Historical note
De Zilverfabriek is located at the site of the print shop of William Brewster, from which this pilgrim father ran the Pilgrim’s Press, publishing tracts in English, Latin, and Dutch against king Henry the VIII. Our studio is next to the William Brewstersteeg. a small passageway formerly called ‘the Stinksteeg’, which meant at that time just what it sounds like.
The Pilgrims had evaded English persecution, and were given a religious safe haven by the Calvinist Dutch upon their arrival in 1608. By 1609 they settled in Leiden, whose city magistrates declared they could “refuse no honest people free entry to come live in the city.”
